At times, Lakeside head coach Tom Clements almost can’t believe his eyes. The team he watched lose four of its first five games, inlcuding a 19-2 loss to Class AA, Region 1 rival Edgewood, doesn’t appear to be the same team he just watched rally from a 4-0 deficit to score a 6-5 win against Crenshaw Christian and move one step closer to a playoff berth.
“This isn’t the same team that started the season,“ Clements said. “We’ve really improved, and we’ve got a shot to do something positive for our boys’ athletic program by making the playoffs.“
There are a couple of scenarios that could land the Chiefs in the postseason, but the bottom line is they need to take at least one game of a doubleheader from Autauga on Thursday to ensure that they have a spot in the postseason, which would be a tremendous accomplishment given how young the Chiefs’ lineup is. Just one senior and one junior are on the Lakeside roster. A host of freshman and sophomores make up the lineup, which has managed to win six of its last nine games.
Thursday at Old Creek Town Park, the Chiefs will be gunning for their eighth win of the season. If it comes, it will be the biggest of the season by far. I’m sure the team would love to share it with their fans, so if you don’t have anything pressing to do at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, swing by the ballpark and take in a game or two.

The word on the street is that Barbour County’s Devondrick Richardson isn’t quite ready to hang up the basketball sneakers just yet. In February, the 6-foot-2 senior signed a National Letter of Intent to play football at South Alabama. According to a report by Eufaula Tribune correspondent Andre Wright, Richardson announced at Friday night’s Alabama-Mississippi All-Star Game that he also plans to play basketball at South Alabama.
On Friday, Richardson scored four points in Alabama’s 78-74 win against Mississippi.
As a senior, Richardson - who was named the Class 2A Player of the Year by the Alabama Sports Writers Association - averaged 20.9 points, 10.0 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 4.0 blocks a game while leading Barbour County to a 28-5 record and the Class 2A state championship.

Former Eufaula High School standout Terran Condrey is going to the Big Dance. Condrey and her Baylor teammates secured a No. 2 seed in the tournament and will open against Texas-San Antonio. Maybe Condrey will be a part of back-to-back championships. Last year as a senior at Eufaula, she led the Lady Tigers to the 2008 Class 5A state championship with a 32-2 record. She averaged 22 points, 9.4 rebounds, 4.3 steals and 8.1 assists per game, while shooting 56.7 percent from the floor and 83.8 percent from the free-throw line.
Here are her stats from this season and a link to her profile.
The Lady Bears’ first round game is scheduled for Sunday at the US Spirit Arena in Lubbock, Texas. You can check out the game on ESPN2. It will begin 30 minutes after the conclusion of the Texas Christian-South Dakota State game which begins at 6 p.m.

Former Lakeside head basketball coach Lester Bratcher is stepping down as head football coach at Ashford High School. Bracther, who led Lakeside to a basketball state championship in 1985, will remain as the school’s athletic director - at least until the end of the year.
Bratcher was also an assistant football coach at Lakeside before making the move to Ashford in 1985 where he coached boys basketball and helped with football. Bratcher coached basketball for 14 years and took over as softball coach in 1992. He gave up both when he was elevated to head football coach in 1999. As coach of Ashford’s girls slow-pitch softball team from 1992-99, Bratcher led the Yellow Jackets to back-to-back state titles in 1996 and 1997 and to state runner-up honors in 1994, 1995 and 1998.
For more on Bratcher’s resignation check out this article by the Dothan Eagle’s David Mundee.
