The Barbour County Sheriff’s Department reported an escapee Wednesday that lasted approximately two minutes according to Sheriff Leroy Upshaw.

According to the report, an inmate, 28-year-old Derek Lionel Russell, was waiting in the sally port for one of the doors to open. As a jailer was pulling into the sally port, Russell ran out of the building and across the lawn. Sheriff Leroy Upshaw saw the inmate running and chased him down on foot before he could travel far from the jail.

Kenneth Chad Ivey, 45, of 2652 Hwy. 10 in Clio was arrested Sunday and charged with unlawful possession or receipt of a controlled substance (crack cocaine) and possession of drug paraphernalia. According to reports, Ivey was found at a River Road location in Ariton passed out in his vehicle. The drugs were found in his lap upon investigation of the scene.

Melissa A. Hallford, 29, of 38 Nern Street in Clayton was arrested Friday after deputies found a bag of what is believed to be marijuana sewn into the hem of a sweatshirt that Hallford attempted to bring to her boyfriend at the Barbour County Jail. She was charged with promoting prison contraband second degree, a felony offense.

The Barbour County Sheriff’s Department reported serving 201 legal documents this past week. Deputies spent 190 hours in court and drove approximately 200 miles for transport this week.

The jail reported having 106 inmates (capacity is 98) as of Wednesday morning, with 16 of those being sex offenders from the state.
