Sheriff Upshaw dropped from lawsuit

The Barbour County Sheriff’s Department and Sheriff LeRoy Upshaw have been dropped from a lawsuit filed by various plaintiffs including Tera Benefield, daughter of former Chief Deputy Ronnie Benefield.

The sheriff’s department is currently without a chief deputy. Benefield was recently asked to resign. Upshaw states that Benefield’s departure was based on personnel issues and had nothing to do with the lawsuit. (More on this story will appear next week in The Tribune.)

The incident where Ms. Benefield, along with Ray Charles McCloud and Leon Jernigan, Jr., filed a lawsuit against the sheriff’s department, several deputies and Ronnie Benefield, occurred earlier this year.

Read more on this story Friday, Nov. 20, in the weekend Tribune.

jhn38,

You’re showing a high degree of intelligence yourself by accusing me of beastiality and not paying child support.

My wife takes offense at you calling her a farm animal. All of my children live with my wife and me. I have never been asked to pay child support since I take care of my brood.

What gripes me is the fact that Law Enforcement Officers (LEOs) take extreme measures to “act cool” and look military. If you want to look military, let me know and I’ll put you in touch with a local military recruiter.

The fact that 99% of all police officers wear military garb is irrelevant. Where did the statistic come from, anyway? When I was in the Eufaula public school system, we were instructed to cite our sources. I see you failed to do so.

I know when I drive to Dothan, I see a number of individuals who drive in the left hand lane the entire route. Is it illegal? No. Aggravating to other motorists? Yes. Is wearing military garb for LEOs wrong? No. Is it improper? I think so.

The allegation of improper actions by (former)Chief Deputy Benefield was not made by me. It was an observation on my part. I read it on this website.

And to respond to your comment about Ronnie.  The definition of allegation is “An assertion made by a party that must be proved or supported with evidence”. So until you see any evidence which I know for a fact you have not, keep your comments to yourself.  That would be like someone alleging that you molest farm animals.  Is it true?  Do you molest farm animals?  Cause that’s what I heard

eufaulanative, you can really tell how unintelligent you are.  Just to let you know, approximately 99%of all police officers wear military combat style boots, and all police departments are para-military.  We have military structure, military rank, and we sometimes use military tactics.  So yes we are para-military, and yes we wear combat boots.  As deputy sheriff’s we are also tasked with kicking in a door to take down a methlab, and we are also tasked with apprehending subjects who fail to pay there child support.  I think I know what your deal is.  You must have been picked up for not paying child support, I see where your sore attitude comes from.  We must have frightened you with our combat boots and our polo shirts.  How military are polo shirts?????  And I’m sure your attitude will change one day when we put our life on the line to save you and or your family.  But until then keep talking bad about us and telling us what a lousy job we are doing.  And regardless of what you say or what you do to us, we will still do our job.

No, I don’t know Mr. Benefield. Do I need to?

The point of my comment was to make a negative comment against the para-military uniforms and actions of the Barbour County Sherrif’s Department.

When Mr. Williams was the sherrif, the deputies wore “Class A” type uniforms. They were proffesionals. The deputies we have now wear quasi-military fatigues and combat boots. Tell me what combat they have been in. Pulling over a speeding vehicle? That’s all I ever see them do.

If they were kicking in doors in a meth lab, then sure, wear the stuff. To present someone a warrant for not paying child support…then, no, they should be properly dressed.

Mr. Benefield was apparently one of the extreme deputies. Have you read the allegations about him? His own child filed them.

He has been asked (forced) to resign. If someone is asked to resign…that pretty much means they were terminated (fired).

So, no, I do not know him. Why would I want to?

Eufaula Native, what was the point of that comment? Do you even know Ronnie Benefield? You trying to compare the sheriff’s department to the Military is uncalled for.

Good. Get rid of all the (want to be) para-military law enforcement officers. If they want to wear Army style boots and military fatigues…..then join the military. They’re hiring.
