When most people think of summer, they think of youngsters enjoying a two-month vacation.

But not all Bluff City kids are out of school this summer. Several are participating in summer school either to boost their academic skills or simply enrich them.

Eufaula City Schools has three different summer school programs held from June 8 - July 3: one for primary school students, another for elementary and a third “secondary” summer school for middle and high school students.

The first “summer school” is simply an enrichment program for primary school students. It is held five days a week from 8 a.m. - 12 p.m. for children in kindergarten through second grade. It currently hosts 25 children.

“It focuses solely with reading,” says ECS Director of Student Services Alan Miller. “It provides a little extra summer enrichment so when kids start in August, they’ll be ready to get in there and be academically focused.

“The (four) teachers use the same instructional material (used during the school year), so it provides a nice continuity for the children,” Miller explains.

The second summer school focuses on elementary school students in third through fifth grades. This program is held five days a week, from 8 a.m. - 12 p.m., and hosts two teachers and 13 children. It assists children struggling in either reading or math.

Miller says the teachers, “Carefully look at what they (the children) were having trouble with and focus on those problems.”
