Let your voice be heard

Voters going to the polls this Tuesday won’t find an exciting ballot in Barbour County.
We’re not talking about the candidates, but the offices they are running for. There just aren’t that many big-name races on the ballot – especially compared to the presidential primaries held in February and the general election planned in November.
But county voters should still go the polls and make their voices heard.
The most talked-about election on both the Democratic and Republican ballots regards U.S. House District 2 and who will replace Rep. Terry Everett in Washington next year.
This race is creating a lot of buzz across the state and even the nation. It’s not often there’s a congressional election without an incumbent running. Democrats are also hoping to capture this seat, which has been Republican-controlled for decades.
Whether you choose to vote Democrat or Republican Tuesday, there are good candidates to choose from. There are three Democrats and six Republicans.
That means there’s a good chance we’ll have run-off in a few weeks to determine the Republican candidate in November. It takes “50 percent plus one” to earn the party’s nomination, and we don’t think any candidate will come close to that number in the Republican primary.
A handful of voters will also determine who will represent their district on the county school board. Incumbents Murray Warr and Wayne Griffin both face opposition.
Warr will face Jackie Davis in District 3 (basically Clayton) while Griffin will face Mary Hoover Smith in District 5, which includes Baker Hill, Texasville and much of southern Barbour County.
We’re curious to see if the board’s recent decision to hire Gary Quick as county schools superintendent has any impact on voters.
Polling hours are 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday. If you have questions about where to vote, call the county board of registrars at 687-1585 or 775-8579. Voters should also bring some type of identification to the polls.
And remember we’ll post election results on http://www.eufaulatribune.com and next weekend’s edition of The Tribune.
