Newton finishes 18th at meet
Eufaula’s Steven Newton picked up an 18th place finish in the 3,200-meter run Saturday at the Alabama High School Athletic Association Championship Track & Field Meet.

Coaches find silver lining
Eufaula scored two touchdowns to Barbour County’s zero Friday night at Tiger Stadium, but according to Eufaula head coach Dan Klages there was no real winner. That’s because severe weather forced school officials to call the game off with 2:40 remaining to play in the first half.

Tigers run past Jaguars
A pair of first-quarter rushing touchdowns powered Class 5A Eufaula to a 14-0 win against Class 2A Barbour County Friday night in a shortened spring football game played at Tiger Stadium.
Jags, Tigers meet tonight
In a regular spring football game the outcome is almost immediately forgotten as the coaches, teams and fans turn their attention toward the fall and the start of the season. That won’t be the case tonight when cross-county rivals Eufaula and Barbour County meet.

Lakeside honors teams
Lakeside head basketball coach Ricky Ward still hears people talk about the 1989 team that he coached to a perfect 26-0 record and a state championship.
Ward never gets tired of hearing the stories and even sharing a few of his own. He admits it was a “special” team. On Thursday night, Lakeside honored another special team when the 2009 Lady Chiefs received their state championship rings at the school’s annual varsity sports banquet, which was held at Southpoint Church.

Thomas inks with Tuskegee
Calvin (C.J.) Thomas received a red and gold Tuskegee University necktie from his mother, Vachon Hunter, for Christmas. He put it to good use Wednesday. Thomas sported the neckwear as he signed a National Letter of Intent to play college basketball at Tuskegee.
Tigers, Jags will meet on gridiron
May 15 history will be made. For the first time ever, Eufaula and Barbour County will square off on the gridiron when the teams meet in a spring game at Tiger Stadium.

Rehobeth edges Eufaula
The pitch was outside. It just wasn’t quite far enough outside. For the second time in as many games, Rehobeth shortstop Courtney Cherry smacked the game-winning hit against Eufaula when she drove on outside offering from right-hander Christy Shankle back up the middle to plate two runs and give the Lady Rebels a 2-0 win Wednesday in the championship game of the Class 5A, Area 3 tournament in Eufaula.

Homer sinks Eufaula
Rehobeth shortstop Courtney Cherry’s day at the plate was shaping up to be one to forget. Then she blasted a three-run home run with two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning to lift the Lady Rebels to a 5-2 win against top-seeded Eufaula in a winner’s bracket game at the Class 5A, Area 3 tournament.
Eufaula opens area tourney
There’s little doubt that as the Class 5A, Area 3 tournament kicks off today, top-seeded Eufaula is eyeing a possible second-round showdown with Rehobeth. A first-round win by both teams would set up a matchup between the rivals, which split the regular-season series with both teams winning on their home field.

Eufaula edges Rehobeth
Maybe it was karma. Maybe it was coincidence. Or maybe it was just good hitting, but less than two weeks after surrendering a three-run, walk-off home run to Rehobeth’s Spencer Adkinson, Eufaula junior India Kornegay smacked a double off Adkinson in the bottom of the sixth inning to score two runs and propel the Lady Tigers to a 2-0 win against the Lady Rebels in Eufaula.
Chiefs a win from playoffs
Lakeside took another step toward securing a playoff berth Thursday when it split a doubleheader with Class AA, Region 1 rival Crenshaw Christian at Old Creek Town Park. A 6-5, come-from-behind win, extra-inning in game one left the Chiefs in need of just a single win to secure a playoff berth.

Eufaula wins tournament
It wasn’t the start Eufaula was hoping for, but the ending suited the Lady Tigers just fine. After dropping their first game of the Enterprise Lady Cat Invitational, the Lady Tigers reeled off five straight wins to claim the tournament title.

Wildcats claw Chiefs
Tuesday was a case of good news and bad news for Lakeside. The bad news was the Chiefs dropped a 12-1 decision to Class AA, Region 1 rival Edgewood in Elmore. The good news was the unpleasant game lasted just 57 minutes.
