The Eufaula Wave Runners won’t field the biggest team in the state this year.
But swimmer for swimmer, the Wave Runners will be among the most experienced squads in the area. Head coach Jamie Hahn expects to have 20 swimmers compete this summer season, which begins June 13 with a meet in Eufaula. Most of the swimmers competed last year with the Wave Runners.
“It is not that much of a change from last year, but we are always promoting the program trying to grow this great sport,” Hahn stated in an e-mail. He has a good nucleus of experienced swimmers returning. Two of the swimmers, 11-year-old Will Gibson and 10-year-old Alex Johnston, qualified for and swam in the Southeastern Swimming Championships.
Johnston also swam in the Sectionals Championship.
Most of the swimmers are expected to qualify for the Alabama Recreation and Parks State Championships, which will be held this July in Cullman. Hahn said he wants his swimmers to take home more than trophies and ribbons, though.
“A lot of people and also young coaches would say bring home trophies from meets. I do not deny that is a goal but not the main goal,” he said.
