Mike Canfield, director of the cardio-pulmonary department at Medical Center Barbour in Eufaula, was recently awarded a $28,000 scholarship from the Pulmonary Pediatric Center at UAB Children’s Hospital in Birmingham.
Canfield graduated from UAB in 2000 with a bachelor’s in allied health and a minor in healthcare administration. Mike plans to obtain his master’s degree in healthcare beginning the last of May with the help of the scholarship.
“My plans will be to take on more responsibility in this field such as teaching at Wallace College,” he said.
Mike has worked at Medical Center Barbour for more than a year.
He is originally from West Virginia and is married to Leslie, who will be graduating soon from the University of South Alabama as a nurse practitioner. They have four children, Joshua, 16, Rebecca, 15, Jonathan, 14, and Benjamin, 13.
We wish Mike the best of luck in his endeavors.

In his second year performing with the Tri-State Community Orchestra of Dothan, William Scarborough of Clio was assigned as principal trumpet in the orchestra.
Scarborough received his bachelor’s from Troy University with a major in human services and a minor in music and art. He is happy to share his talents with local churches, the military and guests of military events, and, most recently, guests of TOC concerts.
Eugene Conner, director of the TOC, said the orchestra is in its 14th season and consists of about 60 musicians. They perform five to six concerts each year and would like to expand their community outreach to other areas, including Eufaula.
Conner is encouraging everyone to come out and hear the musicians perform “A Patriotic Celebration” July 1, at the Headland Square in Headland at 7:30 p.m. The event is free and the orchestra will perform one or two selections with other groups at the celebration. The 108-member community choir of Headland and the Headland High School band will also perform.
Some selections to be performed will be “Stars and Stripes Forever”, “Let Freedom Ring”, “America the Beautiful”, and Irving Berlin’s “God Bless America.”
Jim McGhee of The Headland Renaissance Club has been working with Conner to sponsor this event.
For more information contact Conner at 334-794-5096.
We’re proud of you William!
