Lately, my jaunts Around the Corner have unearthed some exciting stories from around the world. This time it’s a trip to Africa in a story about the Cokers’ safari trip in the Kilahari Desert Region.
Bob and Tami Coker were residents of Eufaula since 1996, but recently moved to Birmingham at the beginning of last summer.
Bob Coker is a professional hunter that many in Eufaula may remember as the promoter of the “World Deer and Turkey Expo” and host of a show called “Outdoors with Bob Coker.”
His daughter, Channing Coker, sends me this story of her family’s latest adventure on safari.
Channing’s safari experience
“My dad is a professional hunter. He travels the world hunting for a living. Our entire family joins him on these adventures as often as possible, but it usually has to be scheduled during a school break/holiday.
“My family traveled to a game ranch in South Africa for Spring Break this year where we hunted on safari. Lash Le Roux Safaris is located in the Kalahari Desert Region; about 200 miles from Kimberley, the diamond capital of the world, 100 miles south of Botswana’s southern border, and 40 miles south east of the Tswalu Desert Reserve.
"We saw so many animals I couldn’t possibly list them all. But to name a few: Bontabok, Cape Buffalo, Eland, Giraffe, Gemsbok, Impala, Jackal, Kudu, Red Hartebeest, Rhinoceros family (Daddy, Mama, and baby; baby was feeding and we could hear it suckling), Sable, Springhare, Tsessebe, Blue Wildebeest, Black Wildebeest, and Zebra."
