The Dudley Quarters community is “on the move” again.
Concerned citizens of the neighborhood have started cleaning up nuisance properties in the area. Councilman Johnny Knight said Community on the Move helped pay for cleaning the properties, which had become overgrown and littered with trash.
“We did it before when we got a grant,” said Knight. “Now it’s right back as it was. Our hope is that once we clean it up this time, the owners will help maintain it.”
But many of the property owners don’t live in Eufaula anymore, said Knight. Thus, the easiest way to get the properties clean is to do it themselves.
Knight, Martha Jemmott, Willie Walton, Eddie Owens and others are helping lead the On the Move organization. Knight hopes they will soon have participation from major churches in the area including St. John AME, Zion Baptist Church and New Covenant Church.
Knight said a cleaner neighborhood is also a safer neighborhood.
“This area has become drug infested,” said Knight. “The drug dealers come down here to hide from the police because of it being so overgrown. People are afraid to sit out on their own porch at night.”
Knight hopes a cleaner appearance and fewer places to hide will deter drug dealers from frequenting Dudley Quarters.
Last week, workers cleared a large section of one block.
“We want this community to look nice and be safe,” said Knight. “Ultimately, our goal is to attract more people into the neighborhood and rebuild Dudley Quarters.”
