Eufaula voters concerned about local economy, jobs

As Eufaula voters filed through polling centers Tuesday and cast their votes for mayoral and city council candidates, jobs and industry weighed heavily on their minds.

Several voters, when asked what issues were important to them in this year’s local elections, stated that they wanted to see more industry and more jobs come into Eufaula.

Local voter Larry Parks stated he was concerned about the economy and wanted to see new jobs come into the area.

“I was glad to see Wal-Mart coming here and the new hotel,” he said. “I think it’s a good sign for the future.”

He also discussed the need for road improvements, adding, “Though I know a lot of that depends on the economy.”

Parks felt that good government starts on the local and state level, where he says the majority of the power should reside.

Sylvia Manley-Dansby also considers local elections important.

“We have the opportunity to have a say,” she says. “If you don’t vote, then you’re letting everyone decide for you.”

She said she wants to see more industry come into the area and admits that there is always room for improvement and change in Eufaula and in any community.

Emma Foy said she wanted a candidate who would try to get more jobs and better jobs developed in the area. The U.S. Hwy. 431 Alternate Route and manufacturing are two local issues that concerned Foy.

Like many of the candidates, some voters were just glad to see this round of elections finished.

Drexie Cunningham said, “I’m just glad to get it over with and behind me.”

Cunningham never misses an election and says, this time, she was concerned about getting better housing and better places to live for people in Eufaula.

Her daughter, Magalene Melton, took her to vote Tuesday.
