A Clayton family lost their home Friday afternoon after their trailer caught fire.

The trailer was located on Tyson Road, off of Highway 30 and just a couple of miles from downtown Clayton. According to Ronnie Benefield of the Barbour County Sheriff’s Department, it appears that everything in the trailer was destroyed.

There were five children home at the time. Fortunately the children, ages 4 through 15, escaped unharmed.

Benefield said two of the children smelled smoke in the trailer and went to investigate. They found the fire behind a dresser in one of the bedrooms. The children then evacuated the house and called for assistance.

“Everything else can be replaced. But life cannot be replaced,” Benefield said.

The fire was reported to Barbour County E-911 just after 1 p.m. Clayton and Louisville fire and rescue squads responded to the fire, but by then the trailed was engulfed.

More information on this story will appear in the midweek edition of The Eufaula Tribune, available Tuesday morning.
