County budget down by 4 percent

» 0 Comments | Post a Comment

Barbour County commissioners have approved the county’s 2009 budget.

The budget calls for a 4 percent decrease in expenditures and the elimination of four full-time jobs and one part-time job.

Despite the tight budget, commissioners did manage to cover a projected employee health insurance hike of $50 per employee per month.

Citing low wages for county employees, commissioners continue to cover the entire health insurance premium for employees.

County employees do pay premiums for family coverage.

The 2009 budget does not fund an animal control program despite repeated calls from rural residents who complain of problems with wild dogs.

The 2009 budget does not call for diverting funds from the county’s slim reserves.

Commissioners say this reserve is nearly depleted.
