Mayor Jay Jaxon reported on Thursday morning that the city will soon start phase two of the Rails to Trails project.
Hudmon Construction Company in Opelika was awarded the bid on the project. Jaxon said they hope to start work on June 15 and finish around the first part of December.
The project will be completed in two parts. The first part will focus on the old rail road trestle, which Jaxon described as a “dramatic” part of the trail overlooking the water. The second part will be the connecting trail that will end at the pavilion in Old Creek Town Park.
“We’re excited about (the project),” said Jaxon. “I think this will really open up the north end of town to the downtown area.”
The first phase of the trail, which was completed last year, is already a popular spot for locals to walk, bike, hike and explore.
