Sheriff Upshaw dropped from lawsuit

» 7 Comments | Post a Comment

The Barbour County Sheriff’s Department and Sheriff LeRoy Upshaw have been dropped from a lawsuit filed by various plaintiffs including Tera Benefield, daughter of former Chief Deputy Ronnie Benefield.

The sheriff’s department is currently without a chief deputy. Benefield was recently asked to resign. Upshaw states that Benefield’s departure was based on personnel issues and had nothing to do with the lawsuit. (More on this story will appear next week in The Tribune.)

The incident where Ms. Benefield, along with Ray Charles McCloud and Leon Jernigan, Jr., filed a lawsuit against the sheriff’s department, several deputies and Ronnie Benefield, occurred earlier this year.

Read more on this story Friday, Nov. 20, in the weekend Tribune.
