Barbour County Schools opened their doors to a significantly lower number of students on Monday.
Superintendent Gary Quick reported Monday night that they had 180 fewer students in attendance than anticipated for the first day of school.
By Wednesday, that number had decreased to approximately 80 or 90 absentee students.
Quick indicated Wednesday that a misunderstanding about the school start date could have accounted for many of the first day absentees.
The absent students were from all the schools in the system and not concentrated in one school, Quick reported. Barbour County Intermediate School reported average numbers on Monday, but the other absences seemed to be from the three remaining schools.
The system’s enrollment for this year is estimated at 1,090 students, which includes approximately 30 Pre-K students.
