The Louise F. Martin Endowed Scholarship is now vested and will become active for the following academic school year at The University of Alabama for incoming freshmen from Barbour County.
Lou Martin, who currently teaches at Little Scholars, has touched countless lives of people in Barbour County through her work as a teacher, administrator and mentor to children in both public and private institutions. She has devoted her entire adult life to the education of tomorrow’s leaders and through this scholarship, her work and benefit in education will endure indefinitely.
The Louise F. Martin Endowed Scholarship was started by West Martin and funded primary through the gifts and charity of Lou’s family, the Barbour County Alumni Association and The National Alumni Association.
An official endowment ceremony was held Saturday, Oct. 16, in Tuscaloosa. The award was presented by local businessman Charlie Schaeffer (who is chairman of the Scholarship Committee for the National Alumni Association at The University of Alabama) with the Martin family and local Barbour County Alumni president Craig Harris in attendance.
The scholarship will initially award $500 per semester of the freshman year to the recipient, who will be chosen via a local committee.
Those interested in learning more about the scholarship should contact their school’s guidance counselor or administrators.
