In the late 1940s, Buster Padgett’s grandfather sold tractors for a living.
One of those tractors was a 1948 Farmall H McCormick sold to Bullock County farmer J.P. Thompkins. Many years later, Thompkins made history with this Farmall by using it to spread pesticides on his crops. It was the first tractor to spread pesticides in Bullock County.
In 2010, after serving three generations of the Thompkins family, that same tractor was donated to the Eufaula High School FFA tractor restoration team.
The team’s project has once again been selected as one of 12 national finalists to appear in the annual Delo Tractor Restoration Competition. This is the chapter’s 23rd restoration project.
Eufaula High’s FFA chapter is the only finalist from the eastern part of the country as 9 of the 12 finalists are from Texas. The students will travel to Indianapolis for the competition, which begins Oct. 20.
