A criminal appeals court has ruled that the immunity hearing for an Alabama police officer charged with murder will proceed. Alabama has set an execution date for an inmate who dropped his appeals this summer and asked to be put to death. James Osgood will be executed by lethal injection on April 24. Gov. Kay Ivey announced the execution date after it was authorized by the Alabama Supreme Court. Osgood was convicted of the 2010 killing of Tracy Lynn Brown. Prosecutors said Osgood cut her throat after he and his girlfriend sexually assaulted her. Osgood renewed his appeals after his sentencing until dropping them this summer.

An Alabama city is moving to replace and rebuild its entire police department after a grand jury found a “rampant culture of corruption” on the small police force. The Hanceville City Council on Monday voted to immediately suspend department operations and search for a new police chief to build a new department. The decision came the same day the district attorney released preliminary results of an evidence room audit. Dozens of oxycodone pills, other drugs and a handgun were missing from the department's evidence room. A grand jury in February indicted four officers and the police chief on a variety of charges that included accusations of mishandling or removing evidence from the department’s evidence room.
