AMMS Principal Barbara Lee says that the late Admiral Thomas Moorer serves as an inspiration and a challenge to her young students.
“Who among you will face the challenges Admiral (Thomas) Moorer faced and rise above them?” she said to a student assembly Thursday during a ceremony at AMMS to mark Moorer’s 100th birthday.
In 1970, the Eufaula City School Board decided to name its new 6th – 8th grade facility for Moorer, a Eufaula resident who served as Chief of Naval Operations from 1967 to 1970 and the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff from 1970 to 1974. Moorer was the guest of honor during the school’s dedication in 1971.
On Thursday, school faculty and students marked the centennial of Moorer’s birth with remarks on his life and the planting of a Southern magnolia tree in his honor. Cathie Wilbourne, National Junior Honor Society Advisor at AMMS, spoke on Moorer’s remarkable life.
Moorer was born in Mount Willing and graduated Cloverdale High School in Montgomery at the age of 15, Wilbourne remarked.
