    U.S. Sen. Tommy Tuberville plans to run for governor of Alabama in 2026, according to people familiar with his plans. Two people who have spoken with Tuberville say they expect him to announce a gubernatorial bid. They spoke on condition of anonymity because were not authorized to talk about a campaign. Tuberville, a Republican, did not confirm the plans but said he intends to announce a decision Tuesday. Tuberville was elected to the U.S. Senate in 2020. Tuberville harnessed fame from his college coaching days at Auburn and benefited from a Donald Trump endorsement in casting himself as a political outsider to win election.

      A federal judge is considering sanctions against lawyers representing Alabama in litigation over state prisons after they used artificial intelligence to write error-filled motions. U.S. District Judge Anna Manasco held a hearing Wednesday in Birmingham to question attorneys with the Butler Snow firm about what happened. She said there were five false case citations in two filings. Butler Snow lawyers repeatedly apologized and described the filings as an isolated violation of firm policies.

        Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey has appointed state appellate Judge Bill Lewis to the Alabama Supreme Court. Lewis will be the first Black Republican to serve on the court. Lewis serves on the Alabama Court of Civil Appeals. Ivey appointed him to the position last year.  He was previously the presiding circuit judge in the 19th Judicial Circuit in Elmore County. Lewis replaces Justice Jay Mitchell, who resigned Monday. Lewis is the fourth Black justice to serve on the state’s highest court and the first Black Republican.
