The Lakeside Lady Chiefs are still reaping the rewards from a state championship season.

Lakeside sophomore Merritt Waddell was recently tapped an All State player for the Alabama Independent Schools Association. Two other Lady Chiefs - Catherine Spivey and Samantha Crouch - were honorable mention selections.

The Alabama Sports Writers Association announced the selections this past weekend.

Waddell was chosen as the AISA first-team second baseman. She led the Lady Chiefs in hitting (.422), on-base percentage (.480), runs (44) and stolen bases (22). She also hit 2 homers, 8 doubles and 2 triples in 28 games and was considered the team’s top defensive player.

Waddell also led the Lady Chiefs to a state basketball title in February.

Crouch was a honorable mention selection as a pitcher while Spivey was an honorable mention selection as a catcher.

Eufaula High’s India Kornegay was also tapped as a first-team All State selection for Class 5A.

Kornegay, a junior pitcher, finished the year 13-8 with two saves and an 0.87 earned run average. She also had 287 strikeouts in 161 1/3 innings, including a state record 37 for a game in a playoff win against Faith Academy. She also had four no-hitters on the year.

Ruttlen selected

Dixie Academy senior pitcher Lamont Ruttlen was the only Barbour County baseball player honored by the ASWA. He was tapped as an honorable mention selection for the AISA.

Ruttlen will pitch collegiately at Stillman in Tuscaloosa.
