The Eufaula 9-year-old All Stars won Saturday with good pitching and nearly flawless fielding.
But on Monday they used their bats to remain alive in the district tournament. Eufaula scored seven runs in the second inning and cruised to an 11-0 win over the Troy Nationals.
Eufaula will play tonight (Tuesday) at 8 p.m. against Enterprise American. All tournament games are being played at Old Creek Town Park. Eufaula (2-1) must win to remain alive in the tournament.
In Monday’s game, the local All Stars sent 10 runners to the plate in the top of the second inning to break open what had been a scoreless tie. The innning’s first five batters all reached base.
Carysn Moore led off the inning with a stand-up triple to third base. He scored on Calan Ates’ bases-loaded double to the right center field fence. Ates would then score on a Will Cobb single. Cobb eventually scored thanks to some fielding miscues by Troy National. Jackson Parker and John Williams both reached base before Troy National recorded its first out. But the damage wasn’t over yet.
Parker, Dannon Whitehead, Fate Calton and Tony Johnson also scored in the inning as Eufaula took advantage of more Troy National miscues.
The seven runs would be plenty for pitchers Michael Lewis, Frank Garrison and Trent Webb, who combined to allow just three hits. Troy National’s best opportunity to score came in the bottom of the fifth when the team had runners on first and second with just one out.
But Webb was able to strike out the next two batters - both swinging - to end the game via the 10-run mercy rule.
Eufaula had scored four runs in the top half of the fifth inning to take the 11-0 lead. Johnson had the big hit of the inning - a single to right field that scored John Williams and Whitehead. Calton and Johnson also scored in the inning.
Webb singled twice to lead Eufaula on offense. Whitehead, Calton and Johnson all scored twice.
Hitters 8 through 12 in the Eufaula batting order accounted for seven runs.
