Raequon Kelley won’t take too many pitches Tuesday.
That’s a good thing. Kelley, 12, will represent the Eufaula Parks and Recreation Department at the Sun Belt Tournament Home Run Derby Tuesday.
Troy University is hosting the eight-team conference tournament next week. But before the teams begin their quest for an NCAA Tournament bid, the college and the Troy Parks and Recreation Department will host Tuesday’s family night and home run derby at Riddle-Pace Field. The event begins at 6:30 p.m., and there is no cost to attend.
Kelley is one of eight 11 to 12-year-olds who will participate in the derby. He will be paired with a slugger from one of the eight tournament teams. There will be a temporary 225-foot fence for the youth participants. The number of home runs they hit will be added to the number of home runs their college teammate hits.
Kelley has already proven he can hit the long ball. He qualified for Tuesday’s event by winning a local home run derby.
Kelley hit six home runs in three rounds.
Other participants in the Eufaula derby included Logan Hagler, Hunter Pomeroy, Alex Riley, Sammy Albright, Broughton Jones, Zac Dismukes, Lane Molette, Jeremiah Forte, Drew Spivey, Lyndon Holland and Morgan Parmot.
Kelley and other Sun Belt participants will receive several prizes and also have their picture shown on the large video board in center field.
Eufaula Parks and Recreation Department director Keef Pettis said several individuals helped make the local home run derby possible.
He mentioned Tommy Jones, who was the official marker, and Thomas Espy, who was the catcher for all three rounds.
He also thanked those who helped shag balls in the outfield.
